Rán, the Norse sea goddess
Soft shapes, sharp lines, light, and shadow invite viewers to observe the emergence of Rán, the Norse sea goddess who inspired our latest collection.
Our designer Guðbjörg tells us that, "Rán is edgy, soft and sharp. She seems simple but was in development for over a year."
The mythical Rán was said to pull shipwrecked men towards her, tend to them and give them new life. She hosts the souls as they feast and sing in her hall for centuries. She reminds us of the eternal natural cycle, which can both give and take.
The goddess manifests herself
Says Guðbjörg, "She is sparkling, likes the sea and likes to surprise. Her forms come to life on the body."
Rán admires her reflection in the sea, bathes in the sun and her shadow dances with the waves. Rán has the ability to nourish the eyes and the spirit and the will to draw guests to Aurum, where she wraps around their wrists, fingers, and cheek, cherishes them and gives new life. We do not always see her, standing to the side, so it is easy to pass her by. This is why Rán forces us to stop and appreciate the priceless, remember the inhuman and love the unruly.
In tune with nature
Sustainability, authenticity, and responsibility are an intrinsic part of Aurum’s DNA. We strive to incorporate these principles throughout our company‘s operations, by sourcing and using only recycled and re-refined precious metals and only buying certified and conflict-free precious stones and diamonds.
As our designer Guðbjörg puts it, "The West Fjords part of Iceland, where I grew up, has taught me with their tranquillity and unspoiled nature how important it is to take care of nature. The energy there provides me with endless creative ideas. I want my customers to sense that in my jewellery design."
Our special sustainable packaging is made from Mulberry paper and is modelled on Icelandic stones which Guðbjörg discovered on a beach in Snæfellsnes, creating another powerful connection to the sea which inspires so much of her work.
As the goddess of the sea, Rán’s favourite colour is gold, which she finds in the countless sunken pirate ships on the seabed. This, in turn, has inspired the use of gold in the Rán collection, which is crafted in our Reykjavik workshop from yellow gold-plated sterling silver.
The range includes bracelets, earrings, ear cuffs and necklaces.
Rán is the final story from Aurum’s three sisters collections and her predecessors, the Norse sea goddesses SINDUR and KOLGA, launched last year.
